Plett Rage cancelled due to COVID-19

Taking into consideration the advice given by local authorities, public pressure as well as by the request of the NICD in response to the result of what unfolded at Ballito Rage (28 November - 3 December 2020), the Rage organisers sadly had no choice but to cancel Plett Rage for the Class of 2020, which was scheduled to take place 29 January - 6 February 2021.

The Plett Rage team have worked harder than ever before, during one of the most trying times, to try and give students the gift of celebrating the end of high school safely. We look forward to welcoming the Plett Rage back at the end of 2021.

The Bitou Municipality and Plett Tourism are in support of this change as it is in the best interests to ensure the safety of the students and their families. ‘We are steadfast in promoting #SafeTravels for all guests in Plettenberg Bay, and we want the students to enjoy every moment while in Plett and encourage a positive experience. We are looking forward to hosting this event in 2021,” comments Andile Namntu (Bitou Municipal Spokesperson).  

Plett Rage is the longest-standing and largest festival hosted in Plettenberg Bay. The brand is currently owned by shareholders GNG Productions and Ronen Klugman. More than 5000 students attend Plett Rage annually – prompting the scene and its lively young demographic to get noticed. There are an additional 2000 young adults who participate in the festival on its periphery. The Plett Rage brand is big business. It brings a welcome stimulus to the local economy and it has become very attractive to big corporate sponsors including entry level car companies, banks, financial management institutions, clothing brands and the like. The bigger the festival, the greater the return on investment. 

Previous local tourism product surveys indicate that an average of between R12K – R15K is spent per student. They spend money on accommodation, food, drink, and area activities. This is the start of the Plett summer season, which encourages additional employment in both the retail and tourism industry. 

“The cancellation of Plett Rage will have a further negative impact on the economy in Plett, it is very unfortunate but understandable why it has been cancelled for 2020. We believe it is in the best interests of the students and their families, and at Plett Tourism we are all about promoting safe travel,” says Patty Butterworth (Acting CEO Plett Tourism). She also adds, “Plett is blessed with wide open spaces and an abundance of fresh air, and we are open and ready to welcome visitors and encourage everyone this summer to observe all COVID protocols. We wish all the students a safe and happy holiday and hope that they will be spending it in Plett!”
