Cape 2 Rio yacht race starts

Cape 2 Rio yacht race starts

Thirty-six yachts cast off from Cape Town on January 4 2014 for the Cape 2 Rio yacht race with crews from all over the world. A variety of yachts will be flying the flags of eight different countries including newcomer Angola. The first Cape to Rio race was inspired by Bruce Dalling's victory in the 1968 Single-Handed Trans-Atlantic Race, and was held in 1971 to Rio de Janeiro. Subsequent races were called the South Atlantic race as they went to Uruguay rather than Brazil. The 13th edition was back to the original course, Cape to Rio, in 2011 and in 2014 the race was renamed Cape2Rio.

Western Cape Wine Route : SOUTH AFRICA TRAVEL

Western Cape Wine Route : SOUTH AFRICA TRAVEL

The words of the first Governor of the Cape, Jan Van Riebeeck, when he planted his very first vines, echo down the years to us. "today, praise be to God, wine was made for the first time from Cape Grapes." Since then the Cape's wine industry has steadily grown in size and reputation so that Cape wines are sought after and savoured throughout the world, and each year hundreds of thousands of visitors pour into this region with its Mediterranean climate, to share in the Wine Route experience which stretches from the Constantine Valley behind Table Mountain to Stellenbosch in the Eersterivier Valley and over the Hellshoogte Mountains to Franschhoek or "French Corner". Cape Town is the second largest city in South Africa and is the capital of the Western Cape Province, as well as being the legislative capital of South Africa (the Houses of Parliament are here). It is located in the south-west corner of the country near the Cape of Good Hope, and is the most southern city in Africa. It is a stone's throw from South Africa's world-famous Cape Winelands around Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek.

Western Cape, from Cape Town to Plettenberg Bay

Western Cape (Wes-Kaap) is a province of South Africa, which is bordered by both the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean.

If you leave Cape Town early in the morning in western direction you will experience the sunrise and the region in its most beautiful colors.

After leaving the Cape Town District , one crosses Overberg, which means as much as "behind the mountain" of the Hottentots Holland mountain range. This is followed by the Eden District, named after the Garden of Eden. The road runs along the Karoo, a semi-desert landscape.

Who finds himself unexpectedly in front of the sign of Heidelberg, hasn't lost his way. The name suggests that the place was founded by emigrants from Heidelberg.

We reach the coast at Moselle Bay and experience again spectacular beaches. But when bathing one should be careful, because not only the man loves this coast, but also the great white shark.

This landscape is characterized by numerous lagoons that extend far in the hinterland. Villages, such as Knysna, were founded at the lagoons.

Cape Town is the second-most populous city in South Africa, after Johannesburg, and the provincial capital and primate city of the Western Cape. As the seat of the National Parliament, it is also the legislative capital of the country. It forms part of the City of Cape Town metropolitan municipality. The city is famous for its harbour, for its natural setting in the Cape floral kingdom, as well as for such well-known landmarks as Table Mountain and Cape Point.

Located on the shore of Table Bay, Cape Town was first developed by the Dutch East India Company as a victualling (supply) station for Dutch ships sailing to East Africa, India, and the Far East. Jan van Riebeeck's arrival on 6 April 1652 established the first permanent European settlement in South Africa. Cape Town quickly outgrew its original purpose as the first European outpost at the Castle of Good Hope, becoming the economic and cultural hub of the Cape Colony. Until the Witwatersrand Gold Rush and the development of Johannesburg, Cape Town was the largest city in South Africa. Today it is one of the most multicultural cities in the world, reflecting its role as a major destination for immigrants and expatriates[4] to South Africa. In 2011 the metropolitan region had an estimated population of 3.74 million. The city was named the World Design Capital for 2014 by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design. In 2014 Cape Town was named the best place in the world to visit by The New York Times.
