Geography and history
Franschhoek is situated in the Cape Winelands region of the Western Cape, South Africa. The Franschhoek Valley, known as the “French Corner” of the Cape, is one of the most scenic and charming areas of the Western Cape.
Spectacular vineyards cover these mountain slopes settled more than 300 years ago by the Huguenots, who brought with them their age-old French wine and food culture. This is a valley rich in history centred around a picturesque village of friendly, welcoming people.
Originally known as the Valley of the Huguenots because, after fleeing their homeland when Protestantism was outlawed in France in 1685, a community of French Huguenots were granted land in this valley by the Dutch government of the Cape. Today many of the wine farms still bear their original French names and most of these farms have beautiful examples of Cape Dutch architecture.
Being the food & wine capital of South Africa, the town boasts many fantastic restaurants, 43 famous wine cellars, over a hundred places to stay and galleries & shops to satisfy every taste!
Franschhoek is a wine lovers delight… the valley has a deep vigneron tradition, dating back to the 16th century. Some of South Africa's oldest and most famous wine estates are found here.
