Geography and history

The Central Karoo is one of the worlds most unique arid zones and this region forms one of the six regions of the Western Cape province, South Africa.

The Central Karoo is a semi-arid area with an extremely interesting history and many geologist's dream with fossil-rich terrains to be found in this region. The area is home to largest selection of succulents on earth, while the largest San Rock art site in the Karoo can be visited at Nelspoort.

The Central Karoo region with its harsh plains has been inhabited for over 500 000 years and is one of the world’s most unique arid zones. A legacy of the indigenous Khoi-San people is the wonderfully intriguing rock art to be found inside caves and caverns and on rock formations. Read More
