Kalanderkloof Cottage - Self Catering Cottage set on a 108 ha farm bounded by pine plantations, natural forest and the Karatara River near Sedgefield, Garden Route

Kalanderkloof Cottage is a getaway off the beaten track located in the spectacular Garden Route of South Africa just inland from the town of Sedgefield. This upmarket secluded self-catering and truly off the grid cottage with modern amenities is set on a 108 ha farm bounded by pine plantations, natural forest and the Karatara River. The cottage also provides the perfect spot for just taking it easy with only the chatter of birds and the occasional fish eagle calling to keep you company.

The abundant bird life and flora can be enjoyed especially by walking on trails down to the river or into the Soutkloof and Kalanderkloof as well as on warm-up mountain bike circular routes. In the vicinity of the farm large forested areas and plantations also have a number of walking and biking trails.

Sedgefield is only 12 minutes away to nip out and enjoy beautiful beaches, sport activities and several pleasant restaurants and of course to buy supplies and obtain services. Knysna is only 25 km to the East and George 40 km to the West.

Accommodation

Kalanderkloof Cottage has a contemporary design touch with modern finishes and stylish furnishings.  Ideal-for-two. This small cottage has an open plan lounge, dining and kitchen area. A double bed sized sleeper couch, easily catering for two children, is in the lounge. A four-seater glass table is ideal for enjoying meals in front of the fireplace. A cozy fire to warm up those colder nights or just for enjoyment adds to the ambience. The kitchen is fully equipped with a gas powered fridge with freezer compartment, a gas stove and oven, double basin and cupboards.

Starter pack of eggs, milk, tea, coffee and rusks provided on arrival. Cleaning services only by arrangement as privacy is paramount.

The bedroom has a queen sized bed with quality linen and a bamboo built in cupboard. The en-suite private bathroom amenities include a basin, bath and shower with a view.  The shower has an external glass sliding door which can be opened for an exhilarating almost open-air shower.  Both the bedroom and lounge lead out onto the wooden deck through glass sliding doors where you can relax on deck chairs and soak up the sun or sip sundowners at sunset and listen to the sounds of night owls and the calls of forest night animals. A braai area is provided just off the deck where one can enjoy an open air fire, pamper a potjie or have a barbeque.

Off the grid living in the Kalanderkloof Cottage is achieved by the use of gas for cooking and baking, a solar geyser system for hot water with a back-up gas water heater should the solar system not be able to supply sufficient hot water during cloudy and rainy days. Proud to be eco-friendly, all rain water is harvested and filtered giving a clean non-chlorinated supply for drinking, cooking and washing. A septic tank/french drain combination takes care of the waste water. There is no power and therefore no television or sound system, allowing you to really get away from the rat race. However, the cottage is wired conventionally with standard 3-point South African plug outlets where chargers for cell phones or notepads can be plugged in and charged from a solar/battery power system that also powers the LED wall lights for evening use. Oil burning lanterns, candles and battery operated standby LED lamps are also available in the cottage.

Activities

At Kalanderkloof you can start off and finish the day by doing absolutely nothing!  Ease into the day by soaking up the morning sun, chill and don’t worry, be happy. If you feel like being more active, take a stroll down to the Soutkloof and have a picnic or go for a walk along the roads through the pine plantation. For the more energetic, walk through the forest down to the Karatara river (about 1.5 hours circular route). Another alternative is to have a steady and safe warm-up cycle ride on one of the circular tracks on the farm.

Should you feel like leaving the farm there are many hiking and bike routes in the state forests close by as well as kite surfing, hang gliding, Mashe golf and beach activities in Sedgefield. Saturdays are market days. At the one-stop, three-markets place in Sedgefield guests will find the ever popular Wild Oats Community Farmers Market, the Mosaic Outdoor Market and the Scarab Village Craft Market, a favourite place to get, fresh produce flowers, eats, crafts and more. A number of dining spots can be found in Sedgefield.
